Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD)

WHAT IS MEANT BY INSPECTION (BMD)?

BMD examination is a non-invasive examination using a Dual-Energy X-Ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) device that uses minimal radiation to determine bone density so that it can diagnose osteoporosis.

WHY DO WE NEED TO KNOW OUR BMD / BONE DENSITY?

Osteoporosis is a disease that causes bones to become brittle and break easily. Osteoporosis has no symptoms until the bone is broken, therefore it is also called the "silent killer". Examination with DEXA is the best diagnostic tool for early detection of osteoporosis. Early diagnosis of osteoporosis can prevent worsening of the course of osteoporosis and thus prevent bone fractures.

ADVANTAGES OF BONE DENSITY EXAMINATION WITH THE DEXA TOOL?

  • Accurate (method recommended by WHO*
    and ISCD**).
  • Easy
  • Fast
  • Non-invasif
  • Minimal radiation

*WHO (World Health Organization)
**ISCD (The International Society For Clinical Densitometry)

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR OSTEOPOROSIS?

  • Woman
  • Age
  • Alcohol
  • Asian and Caucasian races
  • Long-term use of steroid drugs
  • Early menopause (under 45 years of age)
  • Family history of osteoporosis
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Insufficient calcium intake
  • Post menopause
  • Smoker
  • Previous history of bone fractures.
  • Thin
  • Other chronic diseases (kidney, liver, thyroid, parathyroid,
    rheumatoid arthritis)

WHAT IS THE PREPARATION FOR A BMD EXAMINATION?

  • Do not take 24 hour calcium supplements
    before inspection.
  • Do not wear jewelry (earrings, bracelets,
piercing) or other accessories containing metal.
  • If you have just had a radiology examination
    using contrast media (barium, iodine,
radioisotope), then the examination can be carried out 14
    days after the procedure.
  • The patient must not be pregnant or suspected of being pregnant.

HOW IS THE BMD PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

  • The patient changes clothes into clothes provided by the hospital.
  • The patient will lie on the examination table and
Follow the instructions from the officer.
  • During the scanning process, the patient
It is hoped that he will not move so that the results of the examination
    Good.
  • The inspection will take approximately 15
    minute.
