The skin is divided into three layers:
- The epidermis, which is the outermost layer of the skin. The epidermis is divided into 2 layers; the outer layer is the dead skin layer (stratum corneum) and the inner layer or living layer is the stratum granulosum, stratum spinosum, and stratum basale.
- The dermis, which is the layer below the epidermis formed from the papilla dermis and the reticular layer of the dermis, where there are protein structures such as collagen and elastin, hyaluronic acid and adhesive proteins.
- The subcutis is the layer below the dermis that contains fatty tissue, apocrine glands and blood vessels.
The difference between young and aging skin can be seen in the picture below.
In aging skin, there is hyperpigmentation, thickening of the stratum corneum, thinning of epidermal cells, atrophy of the dermal layer and subcutaneous atrophy accompanied by a decrease in the amount of collagen tissue and elastin tissue.
